Luke Shaffer is a percussionist serving as Assistant Director of Bands at Morton CUSD 709 since 2024. He is currently pursuing an M.M. in Music Education at Ohio University and holds a B.M. in Music Education from Southern Illinois University. Previously, Mr. Shaffer was Director of Bands at Du Quoin High School (2020-2024) and an Assistant Band Director at Carbondale Community High School (2018-2020). He is a member of the National Band Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of Music, and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education.
In his previous position, Mr. Shaffer led Du Quoin to its first competitive marching band season in school history and established new color guard and winter guard programs. His students regularly received Superior ratings at IHSA Organizational and Solo & Ensemble festivals, quickly returning Du Quoin to the IHSA State Music Sweepstakes ranking for the first time in decades. At Carbondale Community, Mr. Shaffer led marching and concert percussion ensembles to competitive success and festival recognition, as the whole Carbondale music program placed in the IHSA Class A Music Sweepstakes at #2 and #3 in the state during his two years at CCHS.
Mr. Shaffer is a former Mike Hanes Memorial Percussion Chair of the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and has performance experience across the Midwest. He has performed in the Blue Lake Summer Arts Festival's live public radio broadcasts, in the Southern Illinois Summer Music Festival, with The Chicago Winds, with the Con Brio Voce Brass Ensemble of Michigan, and in pit orchestras of regional theatre companies' and high schools' musical theatre productions. Mr. Shaffer lives in Morton with his fiancée Maddie and four cats.
