The Morton High School Marching Band is one of the premier marching ensembles in Illinois and among the top-ranked schools by size in the United States. Wind, Percussion, and Color Guard students are enrolled in separate courses during the school day. Membership is open to all who enroll. Two weeks of Band Camp precede a schedule of weekly full and sectional rehearsals, all beginning in July. Students enrolled in any Marching Band classes are exempt from Physical Education classes for the first semester.
The competitive field show that the band rehearses and performs is a unique artistic endeavor for our students: a fusion of music, visual, and movement arts. The band performs at all home football games, as well as local and regional marching band contests throughout the fall, typically ending its season with the Illinois State Marching Band Championship, of Normal, the Bands of America St. Louis Super Regional Championship, of St. Louis, MO, and occasionally the Bands of America Grand National Championship, of Indianapolis, IN.
The Morton Marching Band has been named the Illinois State Grand Champion in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and the Illinois State Class 2A Champion every year since 2005. They were the 2012, 2023, 2024, and 2025 Bands of America St. Louis Super Regional Class 2A Champion and Finalist, and have advanced to the Bands of America Grand National Championship Semifinal round six times (2010, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025). They have twice been named Class 2A National Runner-Up (2022, 2023) and once Second Runner-Up (2025). The group also performed in the 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade for Illinois native Barack Obama in Washington D.C. in 2009, was invited to perform at the 2024 Walt Disney World Thanksgiving Day Parade of Bands, and in 2017 was awarded the Sudler Shield (the highest international award for a marching band).
The Morton High School Marching Band is under the direction of Andy Empey, Katrina Fitzpatrick, and Luke Shaffer; with an instructional team led by Craig Fitzpatrick (brass/music arrangement), Jeff Arbisi (woodwinds/electronics), Bob Hornsby (battery), Brian Spicklemire (front ensemble), Sara Gray (color guard), talented support staff members in each section, and a diverse cast of frequent clinicians.
